Compassion for the Perpetrator

This lecture is about how societies heal after massive human rights violations, and how we (as individuals) heal after minor (or major) violations. Taking a historical approach, the lecture covers one of the best examples of societal healing – the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was formed after the end of Apartheid in South Africa. Taking a humanistic approach, the lecture also focuses on everyday violations, where we can all relate to being both “perpetrator” and “victim”, and how a deep understanding of our own dark side is a necessary step in making sure it doesn’t run the show.
